Today marks 35 years since Chime was released into the world—an unassuming bedroom recording that went on to define a generation of rave culture.
It all started in Jazzy M’s record store in 1989, when Chime was first played out on cassette. As Paul recalls, “Jazzy M was in the middle of selling all his records on a Friday… He listened to it, said ‘hang on a minute,’ whipped his record off, played it, and stood there laughing, with all these people saying ‘I’ll have one of them’… ‘oh, I’ll have one of them…’”
