Richie Hawtin – “Concept 1 96:12”
On January 1st 1996 I started recording the the Concept 1 96:12 series and today, 25 years later, marks the first time that the entire project has been available digitally.
Originally recorded and released over a year period, Concept 1’s monthly releases documented a year of sonic experimentation. Each month I would record as much music as possible with a strict and limited selection of technology. Gone were the typical “Hawtin” combination of TR808, TR909 and TB303’s which had driven the techno tracks I had become known for under my F.U.S.E. and Plastikman aliases, replaced by a striped down selection centered around three Doepfer MAQ 16/3 sequencers and 5 panels of Serge modular racks. This year-long experiment ended up being the beginning of a new minimalistic phase and set the foundation for Plastikman Consumed, a decade of minimal and set the tone for my label MINUS.
Looking back, Concept 1 was my most fiercely independent release with me taking full control of all aspects of the project, from artwork, layout and design to the limited distribution and subscription model to even pressing all of the records at our own pressing plant. (Nerdy note – before the digital distribution revolution of 1999, John Acquaviva and I were partners in Canada’s only vinyl pressing plant in Toronto, ACME Vinyl Corp!)
All of this is why releasing Concept 1 on Bandcamp makes perfect sense. A platform that more so than any other platform today respects both artists and labels and how this cottage industry needs to be sustained with fair deals that can help nurture artistic creativity. You’ll find Concept 1 exclusively on Bandcamp throughout January and then from February on all other platforms.
