In 1989, Orbital turned a stair cupboard into a studio, and a single take into a breakthrough. ‘Chime’ was recorded direct to cassette, with six inputs and no second chances.
What started under the stairs in Sevenoaks echoed far beyond it: making waves across the UK rave scene, earning them a spot on Top of the Pops, catching the ear of Pete Tong, who called it “one of the finest examples” of a new musical movement.
Joey Beltram even flipped it, sampling and reversing a string from ‘Chime’ in 1990’s Energy Flash, a nod across the Atlantic that marked the beginning of something bigger.
